The cactus of the Four Winds, Trichocereus pachanoi has been the subject of very long sacred use in the Andes. A variety of acrhaelogical finds from 1500 BC on portray San Pedro as a ritual power plant associated with gods and jaguars. It is still consumed as a sacred drink Cimora, sometimes along with Brugmansia species, particularly in rites along the shores of lagoons high in the Andes. The name San Pedro intimates the cactus holds the keys to the gates of heaven. The rituals surrounding its use also have a prominent lunar character. During the ritual the participants are 'set free from matter' and engage in flight through the cosmic regions.
